2024 Catskills Fire Tower Challenge: Overlook Mountain
Overlook Mountain marked the halfway point of our 2024 Catskills Fire Tower Challenge. Conveniently located in historic Woodstock, this moderate 4.6-mile round-trip hike elevates you to 3,140 feet. While its popularity ensures company, the trail felt refreshingly spread out, granting us moments of solitude at the top.
At the parking lot we were greeted by the sight of a Buddhist monastery adorned with vibrant prayer flags fluttering in the breeze. As we started, the icy conditions hinted at a unique challenge compared to our prior fire tower hikes. Some fellow hikers promptly retreated, unprepared for the obstacles ahead. Equipped with our trusty microspikes, we crunched our way up the trail. Admittedly, the old carriage road for most of the hike didn't quite enthrall us and almost made the hike a little harder with the less than stellar scenic appeal.
Along the way, if you weren't expecting it, you'd get an interesting surprise — an abandoned hotel. Originally built in the 1830s, and after suffering several fires and rebuilds throughout the years, the hotel is slowly being taken back by nature with only its concrete walls left. It was a sight to see and wonder what it looked like back in its heyday.
When we finally reached the fire tower, as we ascended, we were greeted with fierce winds at the top. Despite the wind, the panoramic views from the tower were excellent, showcasing the rugged allure of the Catskills.
What's nice about Overlook that most of the other fire towers lack is that there is a viewpoint that can be accessed by a side trail next to the tower. It normally gives you great views of the Hudson Valley and Hudson River, but unfortunately on the day we went, a blanket of clouds obscured most of our view.
As we descended, snowfall added a touch of challenge, obscuring icy patches along the way. Yet, equipped with microspikes and hiking poles, our descent remained manageable. Once more, our Ancash Packable Daypack proved indispensable, securing our poles when not in use and facilitating easy access when needed.
While Overlook Mountain wasn't our favorite fire tower hike, it does offer great viewpoints and historical sites for exploration. Depending on conditions, you can even extend your trek to the beautiful and serene Echo Lake. After your hike you can relax and explore the charming shops and vibrant eateries of Woodstock.
